What is the xen® gel stent?

This implant may be ideal for clients who have had a previous surgical treatment that failed or for those who are not achieving a sufficient reduction in eye pressure with medication. This tiny implant is soft and flexible, working to create a channel in the eye structure to drain fluid and lower eye pressure.

How does the XEN Gel Stent work?

The XEN Gel Stent is about as long as an eyelash. It is implanted just under the clear membrane covering the white of the eye (the “conjunctiva.”) Once inserted, the XEN remains in place permanently. Many clients who have had this procedure no longer need eye drops to manage eye pressure. If you suffer from open-angle glaucoma, protecting your vision is of ultimate concern. However, with XEN, you may be able to stop using medication.

What can I expect from the XEN procedure?

During the procedure, your eyes are numbed with anesthesia, and you will not experience any discomfort or pain. A tiny incision is created on the surface of the eye, and the XEN implant is then inserted into the eye with a specialized injector. The surgery takes an hour or two to complete. You may see bright lights during surgery.

You will need to arrange for another adult to take you home after your surgery. Once the XEN gel implant is in place, it can help you live life more comfortably.

Most clients who have had this procedure no longer need medicated eye drops to maintain healthy eye pressure.

What is the recovery time?

After the surgery, your vision may be blurry, but this side effect will resolve in the days and weeks ahead. Only one eye is treated at a time, so the vision in the other eye will remain. Dr. Soroudi will see you several times after your surgery, including the following day, and at each appointment, he will check your eye pressure to determine whether you need to continue to use medications.

After your XEN procedure

After surgery, you will need to wear an eye shield for two weeks during sleep to ensure you do not touch or rub your eye while passed out.

When outdoors, ensure you wear sunglasses to keep your eyes protected. You will need to avoid vigorous physical activity for several weeks, including lifting, bending, and swimming, and you cannot wear makeup until the eye is fully healed.
